Strategic Plan for the Win!

I'm so excited to report that the Utah State Board of Education finalized our Goals and Priorities last month. We started this process when I first got on the Board in 2023. For 2 1/2 years we've struggled through mini sessions on the first Friday of the month and a handful of board retreats. Last fall I was invited to attend the Strategic Plan workshop for the Utah School for the Deaf. It took two days and was actually a fun process. In our November 2024 Board meeting, I requested that the Board use carry over funds to provide for a third party facilitator to help us finalize our portion of the plan.

The process took a little time to get started as we ended up having to appoint a new State Superintendent in June of 2025. In August we met for 2 days in Midway with Mighty Penguins. They put together a pre-workshop survey that helped to narrow down the areas where we agreed. In September 2025 we approved 3 goals and in October 2025 I put together an evening workshop where we closed our official business and gathered downstairs to finish the work. The Board unanimously agreed that student success and teacher quality were the most important elements to focus on.
